Christmas Shortbread Jars

Today I quickly made some homemade little gifts for my friends.  I altered my shortbread recipe until it fit into these little jars I got from Ikea  called Korken

IKEA KORKEN jar with lid

For my wedding favours I did the same but in mini milk bottles and they worked out really well so I just copied this but had to work out how the recipe would fit in different jars.  As usual I just guessed until I got it right 🤣

For the Ikea size of jar I needed 50g of plain flour, 25g of caster sugar and 25g of cornflour.

First I weighed out the plain flour and poured this in to the glass jars followed by the caster sugar and finished off with the cornflour.

I love how white they are and the cornflour is so smooth it feels like snow 🌨

I tried to print off labels but as usual there was an issue with my printer when I needed it isn't that always the case?!  So I handwrote the instructions on brown card.  All you need is to add 50g of salted butter.  By hand or in a food processor mix everything together, roll out thinly and cut using a festive cookie cutter for Christmas biscuits.  Bake for 30 mins at 150°C or Gas Mark 2 (they will still be very pale) then immediately sprinkle with caster sugar.  Allow to cool completely before eating them.  Yum!!

I rolled the instructions up and put them through the little metal handles.   For my wedding milk bottles I hung them with string and used vintage fabric cut into circles for the top of the bottles.

I finished the Christmas jars off with some green and white twine.  Lovely festive little gifts when it's just the thought that counts.  I think I will give my neighbour one of these too.  I gave my daughter's teacher something similar one year also.  I do love a homemade gift and these are really easy to make and equally easy for the recipient to bake.  I am not sure how many biscuits this mix will make as it depends on the size of cutter you use but enough for you to eat with your festive cuppy!

Let me know if you make these shorties yourself this year and who you would give them to!

Felt Cat

Last year I made a Babushka doll last minute for a gift to fit in a homemade bed.

This year Sidney loves cats...

Very simple white felt with pink heart and a ribbon collar.  I have tons of buttons I bought for Eliza's quiet book so I sifted through them all and found the little pink star.

I saw this pin for the felt cat but it was just a picture so I can't credit whoever came up with it sorry!  It seemed pretty simple to follow for me who never draws just goes straight to cutting and usually at a really inappropriate time like this morning when I was looking after FIVE children - two of which are my own!  The gift is for Friday but I have two parties I am planning right now so I had a spare half an hour to get this finished.  The kids were playing happily and Finlay was making a rainbow loom bracelet for Sidney.

We are LOVING rainbow loom right now.  We have not mastered anything other than this basic design but we will sit and watch a tutorial one day soon!  Easter holidays just now so we are busy touring the parks with a picnic full of old Halloween and Christmas sweets :) Not good enough as a choice of sweet in the house but when you are out in the cold a chocolate coin goes down a treat :)

Party season soon Nerf and Cocktail parties coming soon!!!

I Love a Tutu!

For not being a girly girl I am really turning into one!!

My love of tutus started when Eliza was 2.  Her second birthday party was a Ladybird Picnic and Eliza was dressed of course as a ladybird.  Pinterest had taken over my life and I wanted to try every craft going :) I already had bought a little red tutu in a sale though so I just added black felt circles through the layers and I loved it at the time

But knew I wanted to go back and make a tutu myself - they looked so easy to do.  I found out from this pin how to cut tulle easily - and I bulk ordered TONNES of tulle!!!  I don't know what I thought I was going to do with it all but once I saw all the colours I couldn't resist!  I found them on an Ebay shop really cheap by the roll so ordered in every colour I thought would be useful!  Lifetime supply :)

My friend's little girl is just a couple of weeks younger than Eliza so for her birthday I made her a tutu using these instructions
She is a huge Elmo fan so I cut out an Elmo face and stuck it to a red t-shirt.  Home made Elmo tutu gift <3

It was so simple - basically tying the tulle in knots around a ribbon.  Simples :)

Unfortunately I also bought a blue tutu in the sale so Eliza still didn't get a home-mader for her cousin's space party - just some silver stars stuck onto her shop-bought one.

Still, how cute?!?!

But I was desperate to make my own tutu for Eliza

Our holiday to Florida was the perfect occasion

My very beautiful Minnie Mouse <3 <3 <3

Once we were home it was time to make a new one for Hallowe'en

 Superhero tutu!!
For this tutu I used this pin to satin wrap it with yellow ribbon.  This is really too big for her here but I knew I wanted to make them so they would last some time because even though I bulk bought quite cheap tulle it is still an expensive hobby!

And here she is with her friend in her Elmo outfit from earlier in the year :)

Next was another hero outfit - this time Batman for her brothers Superhero Party

SO cute Batgirl :)

Look how big she got!!  10 months on and she has turned into this little lady <3

World Book Day 2014 and she was dressed up as Little Red Riding Hood.  The "hood" is very dodgy just an old Santa hat attached to a cape - not my best effort but left myself little time as usual!  And the old Minnie Mouse tutu still fits :)

I am sure there will be more in the years to come especially judging by how much tulle I have left :)  Might need to have a tutu party this year!

Birthday Girl

So so busy with parties and cakes I never have a minute to post any photos!

Last week I made a little doll not for any of the parties but because my sister phoned me at 8pm "Do you have a doll I can have that will fit in a little bed?"  I started looking through Eliza's toys frantically searching for a little doll..."No not a used one" she says.  Well no I don't have a stash of unused dollies lying around my house...my present drawer(s)/cupboard/spewing out of every available space/are good but they are not that good.  Actually I did have two dolls but they were not the right size :o Haha.  I was then on a mission to sew up a little mouse from a kit I have lying around but I quickly searched my beloved pinterest for inspiration and came up with a little felt Babushka doll.  I didn't follow a pattern I just cut as usual.  But very similar to this pin which I think might have a template.

I had felt letters from a previous project so I sewed an "S" (the little birthday girl's initial) onto a pink circle then sewed the pink circle onto the purple number 8-ish shape.  I then made a little face with hair and sewed this onto a green circle with scarf shape.  I sewed the green scarf section down onto the purple number 8 shape.  I then sewed a purple backing number 8-ish shape, leaving a gap to add some stuffing, before sewing closed.  Very simple and took about an hour and a half.  It is the perfect size for a little one year old.

This is the little bed Uncle Grant (of lego board fame) made including a little sewn sheet (my sister) and a knitted blanket and pillow (Granny Norma of Abnormal Knits!).  Soooo cute!

And here's little "S" sleeping in her new bed.

Happy Birthday little S. xxx

Quiet /Busy book For Big Boy

Finally I can share with you my quiet book or busy book I made for my big boy.  I made one for his little sister and finished it just in time for us going to Florida and after realising I had spent so much time and effort on his little sister's book Finlay thought he would like one for himself (he can't see green cheese!)  I did include some superhero figures in Eliza's which I knew he would love so I transferred these to his and got to work on ideas for an older boy's book.  He will be 9 this year so he is beyond learning to do buttons and laces etc  - he is beyond the whole idea of the book actually but I felt bad that he wanted something like Eliza's and I loved making hers and seeing her use hers so I didn't mind making another one.

The front cover I decided to go with superheroes.  Finlay is obsessed with heroes - you may remember his Superman obsession - there is something wrong when Finlay is not in some hero dress up or another and even if he doesn't have the outfit he can be found in a vest that is too small with a headband of his sister's round his neck and a coat hanger hanging down his back = Hawkeye!! Resourceful :)   So incase you don't know these badges are Captain America, Superman, Spiderman, Batman and Green Lantern

As usual I spent LOTS of time on pinterest looking for ideas for big boy quiet books but at the time I looked there weren't many - I looked again recently though and there were lots more!  I was nearly finished though so I stuck to my original plans.

Finlay like a lot of 8 year olds loves video games of all kinds.  Since I had the felt heroes from Eliza's book I went from there.  The first page of the quiet book is "Choose Your Character" like when playing the wii...

A little hero city scene
I made a mini book for the characters to stay in
Each attached with a little bit of velcro so they can be removed to fit on the little Finlay
                                                 Spiderman
 Mario and Captain America

                                             Batman and Iron Man

And a little zipped pocket on the inside front cover for hero accessories like masks, capes, hats and moustaches :)
I hand sewed and glued the heroes using felt - Spiderman was the most intricate with lots of sewing but he is also my favourite :)

Next page I went with was "Choose Your Country" - again when playing video games you are often asked for your country or language so I thought Finlay could learn the European country flags - or even just their names for a start :)

Lift the flags and you find out the name of the country - pretty dodgy handsewn country names but he can read them so they will do :) I just used felt and glue for the little flags and sewed across the top of each flag onto the page so they could be lifted up to see the name of the country.

The next page is similar - "Choose Your Continent"

Under each lift the flap is the Continent name.  I plan to add the names of the seas on here as well - possibly loose so he can place them where he thinks they should go - and also some animals/mountains etc of note for each continent.  I saw this felt map but I had the idea before searching for this - I didn't see it used in another quiet book - I'm sure someone somewhere has done this but I've not seen it.

My next thought for the "video game" book was are you right handed or left handed but couldn't think of anything suitable that would teach Finlay anything for this so I came up with the skeleton page

Each name is attached with velcro so he can take them off and start again labelling the skeleton - I did sew on the little pocket but it is far too small for all the labels so only a few could stay in there - there is always the zipped pocket at the front of the book though.  Again I looked for a felt skeleton to copy online and found this one which I really liked but I knew I wanted to make a skeleton before searching - I didn't copy this from another quiet book.

Next I gave up on the video game lay out because I had no more ideas :)
I put on a multiplication table because Finlay is learning all these just now.

I called this "Multiplication" because this is one of the songs Finlay and Grandad danced to all the time when he was a little boy =) (by Bobby Darin)

Next page I did see a pin for (and here)

X and Os.  These have little magnets to keep them on both in the little X and Os and on the page - but they are not good :( They fall off when you lift the book up - they are good for playing the game but not for transporting - so these also stay in the front zip :)

I also looked up felt fractions and came up with these

I was fed up of sewing writing by this stage so I used a paint that is actually for candles but I really wanted this finished so I just tried it out!  I then sabotaged it by leaning in it without meaning to oops - typical me really.

These are all attached by popper buttons so they can be removed and put together.

And that's it!  I could have done more I had more ideas but I spent so long on it - these things do take months!  Even though I worked on this at least an hour or two most nights.

Like everything I do I just like to get on with it not spend time drawing it first and measuring it out so I just sit with my computer beside me and cut out shapes free style - the continents I just had a map on my computer in front of me (not the felt map I pinned - a real map) and cut the shape as best I could.  Not geographically correct I know and I apologise if I have missed some important nook or cranny out but I was going for the idea of the continent Finlay won't know if it is exactly right or not:)

Same with the bones and the flags etc I just cut and stick I don't measure.  I don't have a printer so I can't even print templates out - I really need to invest in one and now I have bought myself some freezer paper I might just cut out some templates next time :)

Finlay is really happy with his book and I am happy with it too - the pages this time are all felt and I didn't use my sewing machine once!  - I have a drama everytime I try to use it!  Combination of dodgy machine dodgy user I think.  I will practice - just not on a quiet book - they are time consuming at the best of times!

So what do you think of this "educational" quiet book? :)
